Banish Gum Disease With Sonicare Flexcare+ Brushing Power

Scottish study shows 70% increased risk of heart disease in adults with poor oral hygiene

May 28, 2010

Up to 90% of the population is likely to experience a form of gum disease at some stage in their life 1, which, if left untreated can ultimately lead to tooth loss or complicate other medical conditions.  Brushing teeth properly however, is the key to healthy gums and the new Philips Sonicare Flexcare+ makes it even easier to maintain total oral health as it is clinically proven to improve gum health in just two weeks.2

Neglecting gums may lead to a variety of oral health problems which can have serious health implications. A recent Scottish study of 11,000 adults, published in the British Medical Journal, has revealed that oral health can have a direct impact on heart disease. The study shows that people with poor oral hygiene having a 70% increased risk of this condition.  Poor oral health has also been linked to diabetes and complications during pregnancy.3 4 5

Inefficient brushing allows plaque to build up on the teeth, particularly against the gum line and bacteria then attack the gums, causing inflammation and bleeding.  If left untreated, mild gum disease can become periodontitis, in which the gums shrink away from the teeth and the tissue and bone supporting the teeth are damaged.  This can make the teeth look longer and unsightly and they may become loose, fall out or need to be removed by a dentist.

Fortunately, simply brushing up on oral care and ensuring that the gums are cleaned properly will enhance a radiant smile and keep more serious health risks at bay, giving plenty to smile about.  “In fact, with superior brushing technology, it is possible to banish any sign of gum disease in just a few weeks,” explains Professor Robin Seymour, a leading periodontist from Newcastle University.

The new Philips Sonicare FlexCare+, the most advanced powered toothbrush yet, relies upon patented sonic technology to deliver 31,000 strokes per minute for a unique cleaning action with 5 different brushing modes. It drives fluid between the teeth and along the gums, keeping teeth and gums in peak condition.

Sonicare FlexCare+ incorporates advanced features including a new Gum Care mode that provides two minutes of Clean mode followed by one minute of Sensitive mode to encourage patients to focus on problem areas along the gumline and is clinically proven to improve gum health in just two weeks .6  FlexCare+ provides superior plaque removal and also helps prevent gum recession, reduces bleeding sites by 71% in four weeks and reduces redness and inflammation .7

Sonicare FlexCare+ delivers a positive brushing experience with an invigorating sensation, clean-feeling teeth and excellent stain removal, motivating patients to brush for longer and achieve unrivalled oral health as a result.  As with all Sonicare powered brushes, FlexCare+ includes patient compliance features to boost brushing time, such as the Quadpacer, an interval timer, directing the patient to brush all four areas of their mouth in 30 second intervals to ensure a thorough clean, and Smartimer which indicates the recommended two minute brushing time .8

Along with its revolutionary brushing technology, FlexCare+ comes with ProResults Brush Heads in two sizes for exceptional cleaning power and an integrated UV Sanitizer which removes up to 99% of selected bacteria found on brush heads .9  It also includes a unique easy-to-read illuminated display panel and 3 week battery life.

The high-tech power toothbrush Sonicare FlexCare+ leaves teeth brilliantly clean, gently and efficiently banishes plaque and bacteria to prevent dental caries and gum disease.

“In addition to using Sonicare FlexCare+ which delivers unrivalled cleaning power, it is important to brush regularly, particularly after meals, to use a fluoride toothpaste and to cut back on sugar which leads to tooth decay and gum disease inducing bacteria and to quit smoking which significantly increases the risk of gum disease,” explains Professor Seymour.

FlexCare+ Healthy Gum Routine

To help maintain healthy gums with the Sonicare FlexCare+, periodontist Professor Robin Seymour recommends the following routine:

  • Brush regularly, at least twice a day (after breakfast and last thing at night)
  • Brush after meals whenever possible
  • Avoid carbonated drinks and fruit juice, especially just before brushing
  • Use a methodical approach to brushing, target all surfaces of teeth right up to gums including interdental cleaning (between teeth)
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste
  • Allow sufficient time for brushing and don’t rush – allow at least 2 minutes – the FlexCare+ quadpacer and smartimer will help specifically
  • Use FlexCare+ as per the instructions, do not apply too much pressure or ‘scrub’ teeth/gums. The Gum Care mode will help target the gum area specifically
  • Additionally, to help maintain healthy gums:
  • Do not smoke
  • Maintain a healthy diet with plenty of fruit - particularly red berries which are high in antioxidants
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates as these tend to have concentrated levels of sugar (such as confectionary, cakes and biscuits)
