Derriford Hospital, part of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, recently upgraded its eight-year old Philips neuro-interventional X-ray system to a state-of-the-art Allura Xper FD20/10 via Philips’ innovative catalyst conversion programme. With the latest software and functionality including Philips’ 3D-RA package, the upgrade has extended the life of the system for another ten years or so, and meant that the hospital avoided the disruption and financial outlay of installing a completely new system.
Philips’ interventional X-ray systems are designed to grow with a site’s changing requirements to ensure a productive, long-term investment. They comprise standard ‘plug and play’ building blocks that can be easily exchanged as new technologies become available. With the catalyst conversion programme, it is possible to add brand-new imaging and software capabilities, simply and affordably, avoiding the need for extensive pre-installation enabling works and reducing equipment installation time.
The key components of the existing system are retained and parts simply swapped for the latest technology, such as the state-of-the-art Allura Xper workflow, interventional tools and imaging chain sub-systems, including flat detector technology. All this can be carried out without tearing apart the lab or disrupting operations for a lengthy period; there is no extensive remodelling or rewiring required.
All this has not only a dramatic impact upon the cost, in some cases up to 40 percent less than the cost of purchasing replacement technology, but also minimises the downtime classically experienced with equipment installations. In addition, labs that are converted via the catalyst programme undergo the same stringent factory testing as new systems, including full support by Philips in exactly the same way as a new system. Another benefit is because the upgraded system is based on the same design principles as the old one, staff can be trained on the new equipment more quickly and easily.
The Allura Xper FD20/10 is an ideal system for the interventional neuro suite. It provides exceptional insight for challenging neurovascular interventions, combining superb flat detector image quality with advanced interventional tools to provide a clear view of vessel morphology so that the physician can be confident of making the right decisions. A biplane system with a 2k flat detector, it captures information at a resolution four times greater than conventional X-ray systems, and Philips’ Xper User Interface has an intuitive and ergonomic design that streamlines procedures and helps clinicians stay focused. In addition, each individual user can personalise their settings for specific vascular and neurovascular interventions.
It comes with Philips’ XperCT that provides CT-like imaging in the neuro suite to enable clinicians to assess soft tissue, bone structure and other body structures before, during or after an interventional procedure. Dynamic 3D roadmap and XperGuide to provide Live 3D guidance capabilities for enhanced clinical insight and navigation for tortuous vasculature, all of which can be controlled at the tableside.
