Philips educational training packages receive green light from society and college of radiographers

Philips Healthcare recently became the first supplier of medical imaging systems and clinical applications training able to deliver accredited, on-site education packages, working in collaboration with the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR).


The accreditation, awarded by the College’s Approvals and Accreditation Board, demonstrates that the educational packages delivered by Philips meet the professional body’s required standards for continuing professional development (CPD).  In addition to maintaining registration, active engagement with CPD can bring a number of professional and personal rewards, with the College of Radiographers promoting the CPD model as a benefit rather than just a sanction.    


The SCoR’s endorsement covers Interventional X-ray, CT Radiology and Cardiology, Magnetic Resonance, Diagnostic X-ray and Nuclear Medicine

In preparation for the accreditation, Philips reviewed and re-modelled its clinical applications training to ensure that the trainees’ learning outcomes can be documented and added to the trainee’s CPD portfolio with ease.  The packages can be used towards an individual’s College of Radiographers’ CPD accreditation and will therefore enable the trainee to comply with the Health Professions Council’s CPD Standards.  Since 2006 this has been a condition of HPC registration.  Philips’ clinical applications training now provides pre-defined evidence so that this can be completed quickly and effectively.


Under the heading of ‘Clinical Applications Education’, intended for staff who will be operating Philips’ imaging systems, Philips has divided the type of education packages into three areas, the first being ‘System Functionality’ offered to purchasers of a new system to enable the users to become familiar with the equipment and start using it.     The second package ‘Clinical

Solutions’ covers advanced functionalities and support tools within the clinical environment.   A third level, ‘Customised Education’ is designed to address specific customer needs with respect to the use of the equipment.   All three courses are held at the customer’s site and conducted by a Philips clinical educator.


In addition to the on-site packages Philips offers off-site seminars, focus groups, study days and e-learning.   These courses are taught by physicians, medical physicists and other professionals.  Topics can include clinical indications, scanning processes, analysis of case studies and treatment delivery. 


Other courses in Philips’ education portfolio include professional development education in an on-site classroom setting or by e-learning.   This category covers personal effectiveness, communication skills, Kaizen training, change management, project management and much more.


Also on offer are Philips’ technical service education courses aimed at biomedical engineers that teach how to maintain and repair Philips’ systems to improve first-line response initiatives.   These courses are carried out at the hospital, off-site in the UK or the Netherlands, or by e-learning.
