Philips Introduces Revolutuionary Oleds: The Next Step in Lighting Solutions

May 4, 2010

London, UK – Philips today showcased its revolutionary OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology at this year’s Grand Designs, House of The Future.

Philips OLED Interactive Light Range of fittings have a soft light effect for functional lighting in the home. The fittings which look more like light sculptures, respond to human gesture and can be brightened or dimmed with just a wave of the hand! The result is a new type of lighting experience that reinvents the way we think about lighting and how we illuminate our homes.  The desk lamp and wall mounted fitting consist of thin, aluminum “light blades”.

The light sources used in each version are a combination of LEDs and organic LEDs (OLEDs). The OLEDs, which are not much thicker than a credit card and can therefore be used in a multitude of interesting new ways, are used on the flat surface of the blades, with LEDs integrated into the thin edges.

Ashley Smith, Marketing Manager for Philips Consumer Lighting UK, said “OLEDs combine remarkable energy efficiency with amazing potential in terms of interactivity, colour ambience and mood-setting. As they are light, flat and transparent OLEDs are not only highly sustainable, they also open the way to new types of applications that we haven’t even dreamed of yet. By presenting these concepts here at Grand Designs we hope to to provide inspiration and trigger the imagination as to how this great new technology can be put into practice in all manner of shapes and designs to enhance our homes of the future. ”
