Updated my 5 year old version with the new. Well designed. Nice the water compartment comes off and could be replaced later if required. Neatly hides cables for storing. Auto senses temp control, and lets you know when needs decalc. Lighter than previous models. More expensive but appears worth it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by annoyedironuser Faulty product with design defect
Purchased this product in December 2014. It developed a fault in April 2015 with hot steam and water pouring from the base unit. Had to take the product back to the shop and it was repaired. Within a week it developed exactly the same fault.

Rated 2 out of 5 by jennieh I expected more
ease of use and design no problems. the optimalTEMP technology is a great idea but I find when switching from a material that requires less heat to say cotton or linen it doesn't get hot enough and doesn't iron all the creases out.. overall not really happy with this iron.

I have to say that this iron does not iron creases out. It also acts as a re-washing device dispensing huge quantities of water onto the clean clothes.

Easy to use and gives a good finish. Light weight iron. Only down side is that it is bulky to store.

This product wasn't my first choice, I must confess:)). One year ago while shopping at John Lewis, the shopping assistant tried to introduce me to the Steam Generator. Silly me, I didn't want to know, being convinced that an iron without the capacity of changing the heat intensity would never work. Almost a year after this, when my conventional iron has packed up, I made some research online and Tah-Dah! I read a review in which a lady was raving about how good and life changing the Steam Generator is and I've decided to give it a try. And IT IS LIFE CHANGING! In such a manner that I no longer take my bed linen to the cleaners but wash it myself instead, just for the pleasure of ironing it. The steamer works perfect on every type of fabric , from silk to wool and cotton. Never have to worry again about burning delicate fabrics. De Calc is so easy!
I don't normally write reviews , but I felt like I have to do it for this particular product, thinking that maybe someone will read it and find out, exactly as I did, that ironing could actually be fun!

I used to hate pressing cloths. Now I love doing it. I bought it some months ago, so I can not rate the product's durability.

I've had a previous steam generator form Philips - GC 8325. Worked for 3 years before it went belly up. Support told me it was a thermostat. Hello Philips, why would a thermostat last only for 3 years?
Gripes aside, I decided to plunge for this model and what a difference. It's quieter than the previous model, has a large water tank and also a larger body, which I was not expecting. The steam output is very impressive indeed. This thing can deliver. Hence the larger body! It has to store the steam somewhere and build up the pressure. It wasn't long before I resorted to the Eco Mode and reduced steam output which coped well with lighter creases mostly on shirts and t-shirts.
What is astonishing is that there is no temperature dial control. Their OptiTemp works really well and I have gone from a cotton shirt to a thin chiffon scarf and it handled it without flinching. No burn marks. This auto-temp speeds up ironing to another level as you are not wasting time waiting for the iron to cool down.
The iron takes 2 minutes to heat and it is ready to go. It works flawlessly when it comes to ironing. I did cupboard full of t-shirts, shorts, 6 pairs of jeans and 3 superking size bed linen and it just flew. No issues on creasing and having to try too hard. Performance is top-class. The auto-temp, glide plate and generation steam output took care of some pretty neat ironing.
My only reservation buying Philips is the question of reliability. If you are paying close to £280 (at the time of writing), you'd expect between 5-8yrs of service. There are increasing reports of lack of reliability but this goes for just about any brand these days. However, Philips customer care is pretty good and I was able to get support using "chat online" pretty fast. They wanted £50 for the repair of the old iron which included shipping both ways. They arrange for a pick-up as well. So there is that assurance that you can have it fixed when it breaks at some point in the future outside the warranty period.
This iron removes one more step from the equation ie no temperature dial and it doesn't get any simpler than this. Highly recommended
