How often should I bottle feed my baby?

As with breastfeeding you should bottle feed your baby breast milk or formula on demand.
In the first few days it is normal for your baby to demand very small and frequent feeds. Babies are expected to lose weight in the first few days and regain it by about day 10.

Newborns may take very small volumes of formula. The volume of feeds demanded will gradually increase until you start weaning and then the frequency and number of feeds should be decreased. Average feeding amounts are:

Approximate Age Approximate single feed volume Number of feeds/day
mls ozs
1 to 2 weeks 50-70 2-3 7-8
2 to 6 weeks 75-110 3-4 6-7
2 months 110-180 4-6 5-6
3 months 170-220 6-7 5
6 months 220-240 7-8 4

Babies don’t always drink the same amount at each feed and should always be allowed to stop when they have had enough, rather than being coerced to drink the same amount at each feed or finish every bottle.

Extra fluid

In exceptionally hot weather your baby may become thirsty in between their usual feeds. You can offer them drinks of boiled then cooled water. Don’t give them flavoured or sweetened waters.
