Gaggia Manual Espresso RI8161/40 Gaggia Classic
Only way to go !!!
I like my coffee strong, black and in a mug ! Mugs are a bit tight on this machine but short, wide mugs are ideal....

Produces excellent esspresso and is very reliable - used daily
This machine has been used twice daily for many years and continues to produce excellent esspresso coffee with a frothy head (crema). As self-confessed esspresso aficionados, we have had a number of machines over the years and this one is the best.
The machine also caters for those friends who want Americanos, flat whites or cappuccinos.

An excellent espresso maker
This is a replacement for a similar Gaggie Classic. The one I had was a bit over 4 years old and the steam valve failed. The cost of replacement was not worth the repair.
This coffee maker is very well designed and it is as they say a "Classic" At this point the machine has performed very well. I use the device mainly with espresso pods and as a result the cleaning is less than it would be when I used the ground coffee. In saying this, the machine offers no difficulty in performing the task necessary to keep the machine in best working order. The addition of the foaming gadget in the base of the basket is a big plus. Perfect foam every time.

Can make good coffee, but requires practice and some research to do so
Needs to be partnered with a reasonable grinder, eg. Iberital MC2, before any hope of a good coffee can be achieved. With practice, and good beans, good results can be achieved.
On the downside, Philips now only include a pressurised basket. These pressurised baskets are really intended for those nasty tasting coffee cartridge things, and not so good for making proper espresso.
The crema perfetta device is there to stop your kitchen being sprayed with coffee (not to improve the crema!), as the pressurised filter basket squirts the coffee out at very high pressure.
The included tamper is also too small in diameter to be of any use. A 57.5mm tamper is needed to put an even tamp on the coffee.
Budget for a decent tamper and proper filter basket, as well as a grinder, if you really want to make yourself a good coffee.

THis italian machine is very solidly built and with the right technique produces excellent espresso coffee. I would recommend purchasing a good quality tamper and using Illy coffee.

Capable of making a great espresso with relative ease
This machine is made solidly, looks great, and most importantly, it makes a great espresso as long as you know what you're doing. That means buying a grinder, a decent tamper, and getting a hold of proper filter baskets.
