Intense Pulsed Light technology (IPL)

IPL technology works by applying gentle pulses of light to the hair. As a result, the hair sheds naturally and regrowth is prevented, leaving you with silky-smooth skin.

How IPL works

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a treatment in which gentle pulses of light are applied to the hair. The light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, and converted to light energy. This light energy then travels down to the hair root, stimulating the hair follicle to go into its resting phase.

As a result, the hair falls out naturally and regrowth is prevented, leaving you with silky-smooth skin.

Clinical studies with Lumea have shown that you can obtain significant (over 80%) hair reduction after just 4 fortnightly treatments. For optimal results, simply repeat the treatment when needed based on your individual hair growth pattern.

With the Lumea range, an internal optical filter ensures no UV light reaches the skin. Some Lumea models* also have a facial attachment, which contains an additional optical filter to further protect your delicate facial skin.

Is Lumea suitable for you?
IPL and different skin types

As with other light-based treatments, IPL's effectiveness depends on the level of melanin in the hair. Melanin is the colour pigment that absorbs IPL. Due to the low levels of melanin in light-blonde, white/grey and red hair, light-based hair removal treatments are not effective on these hair colours. IPL treatment is also not suitable for women with naturally dark skin tones.

Take care with tanning

After tanning, wait for the recommended period of time before you use your particular Lumea model, and do not use it if you have sunburned skin. Be aware that all types of tanning darken the skin, so always check the Lumea skin/hair colour table. If appropriate, adapt the light intensity to a lower setting to avoid skin reactions and side effects.

Your skin will be more sensitive directly after an IPL treatment. Wait for the recommended period of time or until all redness has disappeared before you expose treated areas to the sun. Cover treated areas when you go out into the sun or use a sunblock (+30 SPF) in the two weeks after treatment.

For more information, please check the user manual provided with your Lumea.

Using Lumea

Using Lumea is simple, straightforward and comfortable. You can achieve hair-free, silky-smooth skin after just a few treatments. There are no replacement lamps or messy gels to buy. The Lumea range contains both corded and cordless models* for your convenience. You just need to check that IPL is suitable for your hair and skin type, and then follow a few simple steps.

How do I use it?

First shave the areas you want to treat, to ensure that the light energy is channelled effectively to the hair root. This is generally only necessary before the first 4-5 sessions, when you still experience some hair regrowth.

Then select the correct light intensity for your skin tone at the time of treatment. This will ensure gentle but effective results, while avoiding redness.

Place the device at a 90° angle to the skin. When the 'ready to flash' light appears, you can release a flash. Move the flash window to the next area and repeat the action, ensuring there is some overlap to avoid missing any hairs.

How do I use it?

When not to use Lumea

Philips Lumea should not be used by women with medical conditions such as skin cancer, lesions, epilepsy, vascular disorders, immunosuppressive disorders or skin allergies to light. If you take medications that cause photosensitivity or other reactions, please consult your doctor before use and follow your prescription's instructions.

Do not use IPL hair removal if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and do not use the appliance near any piercings, tattoos, injection sites (e.g. for insulin), pacemakers or implants.

Does it hurt?

In clinical trials with Lumea, no women rated the experience as painful, providing the correct settings according to skin tone and hair colour were followed. Some women did describe experiencing a 'warm sensation', 'prickling' or 'itching', but in most cases these disappeared within a few minutes or an hour.

To get accustomed to Philips Lumea, it is recommended that you make test flashes near the area you intend to treat, using the lowest recommended light setting. Once you are comfortable with this, you can increase the light setting, but it should never become uncomfortable.

Meet the experts

Is Philips Lumea suitable for all skin and hair types?
Lumea has five adjustable light energy settings to ensure gentle and effective treatment across 5 different skin tones and body hair colours*. However, IPL treatment is not effective on red hair, white/grey hair or light blonde hair. Nor is it suitable for very dark skin, as it can cause skin damage, such as burns, blisters or discoloration.

*Lumea Essential is suitable for use on 4 different skin tones and body hair colours.

Ask the dermatologist

Is long-term use dangerous to my skin?
Intense Pulsed Light is a technology that has been in use since 1997 for hair removal. Over this time, no serious side effects or damage from long-term use have been reported. Philips Lumea has been developed in conjunction with leading dermatologists, and fulfils all the safety regulations for home-use appliances. As with any skincare product, it is important to use the appliance in accordance with the user manual.

Ask the dermatologist

What's the difference between Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser treatment?
IPL emits light of all visible wavelengths (like a photo flash), while lasers emit a single beam of light at a specific wavelength (like a laser pointer). This makes IPL more versatile, as it is suitable for use across a wider range of applications than laser treatment.

Ask the dermatologist

Is IPL treatment safe for use on the face?
Facial skin is more sensitive and more exposed to the sun on a regular basis. Some Lumea models* have a special facial attachment with a UV filter that prevents skin damage. By checking your skin type, you can choose the specific setting that will ensure effective yet gentle treatment on your face. Please note that the facial attachment should only be used to treat unwanted hair on the cheeks, upper lip and chin, and not on your eyebrows.

*The availability of the full Lumea range varies by country.

Ask the dermatologist

Can I expect light-based hair removal results to last forever?
Neither professional nor at-home light-based hair removal treatments are guaranteed to be permanent. Due to the hair’s normal growth cycle, light-based treatments are usually performed in a series of sessions. Hairs that may have been dormant during your previous treatment may now be in the growth phase. With both professional and at-home treatments, hairs usually reappear after time, typically in a reduced number or a finer version. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year are often recommended. Philips Lumea uses a lower intensity than the professional treatments, but using it more regularly gives you breakthrough results at home.

Ask the dermatologist

Why do I need to shave before any light-based hair removal treatment?
The melanin in the hair channels the light energy to the hair root. By shaving, you ensure that this happens in the most efficient way and that the light energy is not lost in any hairs above the skin surface. Furthermore, unshaved hair in the treatment area can be burnt by the intense light, causing an unpleasant odour.

Tips & FAQs

Find out how to make the most of the benefits of long-lasting hair removal with IPL.

Apply at bedtime
Use your Philips Lumea before you go to bed. Any slight skin irritation that may occur will fade overnight.

Tips and Tricks

Shave and wait
Before the first few sessions, you will need to shave the treatment area. If your skin is sensitive to shaving, either trim the hairs as short as possible or shave a few hours before using IPL.

Tips and Tricks

Use on cool skin
The hair roots absorb the pulses of light more effectively when the skin is cool, so allow time after taking a sauna or bath before starting treatment.

Tips and Tricks

Avoid moles
Don’t use IPL directly on moles. If there is a mole in the area you want to treat, use a white eye pencil to cover the mole and then treat the area around it.

Tips and Tricks

Stretch your underarms
To make it easier to press the device properly onto underarm skin, raise your arm and place your hand behind your neck.

Tips and Tricks

Position it correctly
To achieve optimal skin contact on your shinbone or ankles, hold the device in a vertical position or pull your skin gently away from bony areas.

Tips and Tricks

Use a mirror
Some Lumea models* come with a facial attachment. For best results on your upper lip, chin and cheeks, use a mirror so you can see the treatment area and the 'ready to flash' light.

*The availability of the full Lumea range varies by country.

Tips and Tricks

Combine longer treatments with relaxing activities, such as listening to music or watching TV.

Tips and Tricks

Stop if too sensitive
A woman's pain threshold often changes due to hormones or mood, so if you're feeling too sensitive, postpone treatment to another day.

Tips and Tricks

Cool your skin afterwards
Any skin redness or itching after the treatment – which is normal and harmless – can be reduced by cooling the skin with some ice, a towel soaked in cold water or a cooling pack.

Tips and Tricks

Keep your cool
It's normal for Lumea and its facial attachment* to get warm over time during use. We recommend that you start the treatment in more heat-sensitive areas like the face, bikini area or underarms while the device is still cool. Then treat your legs next.

Tips and Tricks

Epilation technology

Epilators have rapidly rotating discs that trap hairs and pull them out by the roots. This may be a little painful, but the results are semi-permanent as some hairs never grow back.

Gentle tweezing discs

To make epilating more comfortable, gentle tweezing discs remove hairs as short as 0.5 mm without pulling the skin.

Ceramic discs

The innovative Philips ceramic textured discs of the epilators remove even the shortest hairs in the gentlest way. The ceramic texture reinforces the sturdiness of the discs, ensures more efficient hair catching, and allows soft, close contact with the skin around each hair to prevent pulling.  Antibacterial particles in the ceramic tweezers ensure optimal hygiene.

Precision epilation

Especially for more sensitive areas, Philips has designed a range of Wet & Dry precision epilators. These are ideal for delicate skin such as on the bikini line or armpits. Their compact design also makes them handy for travelling.

Wet & Dry

Some cordless epilators from Philips are suitable for use in the shower or bath, providing you with a convenient and comfortable way of epilating.

Epilating tips & tricks

When it comes to hair removal, epilators are brilliant for achieving long-lasting smoothness. For a more convenient epilation session and better results, just follow these simple tips.

Tips & Tricks

Gradually grow less
Over time, epilating can actually stop some hairs from coming back. To achieve 50% less hair growth, epilate every 4 weeks.

When you are new to epilation, the first few sessions might be a little painful. To reduce this, try epilating when you’re relaxed, and avoid stimulants like coffee.

Tips & Tricks

Go against the flow
Make gentle upward strokes against the hair growth direction, starting at a lower speed if you're feeling sensitive.

Tips & Tricks

Open up
Good news: epilating gets less and less painful over time. To make hair removal easier, first take a bath or shower to open the skin pores.

Tips & Tricks

Peas keep cool
After epilating, sooth your skin by cooling it with a bag of frozen peas.

Tips & Tricks

Exfoliating smooths the skin and helps prevent ingrown hairs. Exfoliate between sessions, but give it a rest for a few days after epilating.

Tips & Tricks

Shaving & trimming technology

When you’re in a rush, shaving and trimming quickly give you the results you want. No pain; no fuss.

Double-foil shaver

The double-foil shaving head with sensitive foil geometry has been designed to give you a smooth shave while protecting your skin.

Wet & Dry

Unlike many other brands, most Philips trimmers and shavers are designed for both wet and dry use. You can use them in the shower or bath for extra comfort, or on dry skin for a convenient, quick touch-up whenever you need one.

Hypoallergenic shaving heads

Hypoallergenic golden shaving foils protect your skin, while the aloe vera strip provides extra smoothness and hydration.

Precision trimming

Create the length and shape you want quickly and easily, without any nicks or cuts. The Philips range of trimmers allows you to trim hairs to different length (from 0.5mm to 10mm) for versatile styles in your bikini area. We also have facial trimmers, which are specially designed for shaping your eyebrows and for easy facial touch-ups.

Tips for Shaving & Trimming

Even if you've been shaving and trimming for years, it can still be handy to find out how to improve your experience - and results.

Make a clean start
Take a shower or bath before you start in order to open the pores and allow for a more precise trim and a closer shave. Philips Ladyshaves can also be used in the wet, if you'd rather shave in the shower or bath.

Tips & Tricks

Tame before you aim
Trim your bikini area before shaping – Philips Bikini Perfect has 5 length setting combs for even results and a precision trimmer for an accurate finish.

Tips & Tricks

Hold the lotion
When shaving or trimming on dry skin, make sure that your skin is completely dry and free from creams or lotions.

Tips & Tricks

Go against the flow
To get the closest shave, make upward strokes, against the direction in which your hair grows.

Tips & Tricks

Stay in touch
For best results, hold your bikini trimmer or Ladyshave at 90ᵒ and make sure the entire appliance head is in contact with your skin.

Tips & Tricks

Post-shave pamper
After shaving, treat your skin to a thirst-quenching body lotion or oil for a silky-soft glow.
