Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead invests in a Philips CT scanner

Guildford, United Kingdom – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) Philips UKI recently supplied a Philips Ingenuity Elite with IMR CT scanner to Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, a small specialist NHS hospital providing reconstructive surgery, burns care, and rehabilitation services for people across the South of England. The hospital has always traditionally outsourced its CT requirements to local NHS and private providers, but had wanted for some time to develop an in-house CT service. The acquisition of the new Philips scanner provides the radiology department with the opportunity to develop its own service.

Commenting on working with new equipment, Helen Joy, Superintendent Radiographer says, “The new scanner has really improved the patient experience and smoothes out their pathway, and hopefully prevents backlogging as well. We have had lots of really good feedback from patients; they are particularly happy at the short waiting times for their appointments, and the fact that in some cases they don’t need to travel a long way anymore.”

Building a CT service in-house

Philips Ingenuity family offers solutions that deliver high performance and virtually no trade-offs, with advances such as the iDose⁴ Premium Package and iPatient, which puts the user in control of innovative workflow solutions. Philips NanoPanel Elite, the company’s latest tile-detector technology has been re-engineered for low-noise, high-fidelity imaging, and with the IMR option, the new scanner offers low-contrast resolution and virtually noise-free image quality. In addition, the fully upgradeable Ingenuity family allows for customisation now, plus the flexibility to grow with the user.

I think Philips was the only one that brought something different to the table and allowed us to purchase a scanner that was beyond our reach really. The clinical site visit was excellent; the staff there demonstrated real use and knowledge of the scanner and showed how easy it was to use. We were looking for a scanner that we could put in and it would not be immediately out-of-date - the Ingenuity system certainly fits the bill.

The system at East Grinstead has been delivered with Philips low-contrast resolution using IMR, which sets a new direction in CT image quality with virtually noise-free images, unlocking significant image quality benefits. This improvement is a breakthrough made possible through Philips’ first iterative reconstruction technique, built on knowledge-based models.

Dr. Ian Francis, Consultant Radiologist, One looks for good quality in terms of the imaging acquisition, but I think then you want a platform that you have got some confidence in, and that you can live with for a period of time. As we all know, the NHS hasn’t got the capital to replace our scanners, so we need a platform that obviously allows for software updates, enabling us to address evolutions as they happen over the next five to ten years. What was important for me in the choice of scanner was that we can future proof ourselves in a way that with this particular model we can take ourselves forward. Developments that I can see on the near horizon include doing more cardiac work, more virtual colonography, but also then lung health checks are coming so early cancer diagnosis can be made. We wanted to have a system that would allow us to adapt to a change in workflow needs.The project management was done very well throughout, with minimal disturbance to the department. Subsequently the applications training work well and I have been impressed with the responsiveness of Philips.
