You’ve kicked the attitude, worked through your angst and you’re adulting with the best of them, so why does your face look like a teenager’s? Pimples may have followed you into adulthood, but there are things you can do to help prevent them from popping up too often.
Cleanse, moisturise and exfoliate religiously. Cleansing removes dirt that accumulates on your skin, preventing clogged pores and reducing the chances of pimples and blackheads. Cleanse twice a day using mild cleansers that won’t dry out your skin, and moisturise right after bathing in order to lock in your skin’s existing moisture. Look for a moisturiser that’s ‘non-comedogenic’– one that prevents the formation of blackheads. Remove dead skin cells by gently exfoliating, but don’t over do it! Once a week is enough.
This will help to relieve inflammation and burning, especially if your skin is feeling extra sensitive. Aftershaves contain alcohol-based astringents that prevent infection, but they can also tighten and dry the skin. If you’re already prone to dryness then you’ll probably prefer a shaving balm. Balms also provide immediate relief after shaving, but hydrate at the same time.
Foods rich in sugar and grease can boost your body’s insulin and testosterone, which in high levels can massively increase sebum production – the skin secretion responsible for your oily face. Stress hormones can also lead to excessive sebum, so try to find time to relax each day.
If you want to avoid future breakouts and potential scarring then stop popping your pimples! The only thing worse than a pimple is one that’s been picked at.
