    Introducing dairy

When your baby is six months old, you can start adding breastmilk, formula or very small amounts of cows’ milk to their weaning diet by adding a few teaspoons to baby rice, porridge and other suitable foods.

Then, when your baby reaches one year, you can offer other kinds of milk as a main drink in addition to a healthy diet of solids. It’s not advised that babies have cows’ milk as a drink before 12 months of age.

    Cow's milk

Whole, preferably organic, cows’ milk is a great source of protein, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, and vitamins B12 and B2. These nutrients are essential for your child’s growth and development, so it’s important that you give your one-year-old full-fat or full-cream milk.

You can use a lower-fat variety of milk once your child turns two – but only if they are a normal weight and eat a well-balanced diet. Otherwise, stick to full-fat milk until they’re five.

    Soya milk

Doctors advise against using soya milk before your baby is one year old – unless your child is lactose intolerant, in which case your GP may recommend a soya-milk-based formula instead of cows’-milk-based one.

    Goat or sheep's milk

Never give goat or sheep’s milk to babies under a year old. Even after a year, it is best to opt for pasteurised milk.
