AE5000 FM/DAB Radio
I saw this radio a while back and despite the not so good reviews I fell in love with its classical retro looks. So with my Christmas money I bought it straight from Philips and it arrived within days. I fitted the batteries and soon had it up and working without looking at the user manual. Its was pulling in all the available DAB stations with no problem, I noticed the tone was pleasant and clear, on both speech and music, with plenty of volume to fill a large room.
But for me its winning feature is its performance on the FM band. I live in an area where reception of the main national BBC stations is both poor and variable which means most radios, new and old, struggle and often only work occasionaly in a few favoured spots around the house. Not so with the AE5000, I am totally amazed at this radios sensitivity on the FM band pulling in all the national stations in all parts of the house with little or no background hiss or interference.
Running it on FM will prolong the use of the batteries I also like the display dim facility which will prolong the batteries even more.
It is for all the above reasons that I will forgive it and Philips few sins which I will list here:
No tone control or graphic equaliser
No audio line out
No external aerial socket.
Overhaul it has completly won me over with its mix of retro and modern charms and its now my favourite and top radio, I think I will sell the rest.
