University Hospitals Sussex and Philips set to improve the diagnosis of heart disease with new Cardiac Catheter Laboratories this World Heart Day

Farnborough, United Kingdom – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) – a global leader in health technology and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, with a worldwide reputation for excellence in Cardiac care, celebrate the opening of new specialist Cardiac Catheter Lab, set to improve the diagnosis of heart disease for people in Sussex.
World Heart Day, celebrated globally today, is an annual event established by the World Heart Federation recognising the need to stop the world’s biggest killer: Cardiovascular Disease. In the UK, the NHS is focused on ensuring better care for this major health condition, with Heart Disease responsible for a quarter of all deaths with a fatality recorded every three minutes.
Over the two years, University Hospitals Sussex and Philips have joined forces to deliver a set of three Cardiac Catheter Labs within the hospitals’ Millenium Wing, providing new contemporary facilities to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart conditions across the region.
University Hospitals Sussex and Philips successfully completed the construction of the first Lab in 2021, with the second opening earlier this month. These transformational clinical spaces have been carefully designed to provide a calming and welcoming environment for patients, whilst equipping clinical teams to deliver more scans with greater diagnostic accuracy.
The Labs, fitted with innovative Philips Azurion imaging solutions mean patients are set to gain from more widely available and accurate diagnostic tests, pioneering techniques, and minimally invasive procedures in surgery, providing more treatment possibilities for patients with Cardiac conditions. The technology provided by Philips supports the health leader’s commitment to improve access to care for people with heart conditions around the world with Philips UK working with the NHS to advance cardiac services and support emergency cardiac arrest.
In extension to the partnership, University Hospitals Sussex will also be able to provide Cardiac Imaging for patients in the newly open Louisa Martindale building, fitted with three Philips Ingenia MRI systems. The announcement today therefore celebrates the expansion of the Trust’s cardiac services to cover all sites, with rehabilitation care also provided at St Richard’s Hospital, Worthing Hospital and Southlands hospitals.
This project was to future proof our cardiac cath labs for the next 10 years. We needed flexibility for different clinical procedures, the ability to modify in-room screen layouts and attach accessory imaging equipment to assist in decision-making during scanning and procedures. The image quality from the systems is fantastic and allows for easy diagnosis, positioning and reduction in screening and acquisition times. The effect this has had on dose is amazing, being able to use higher FPS while reducing doses substantially is a win for both clinicians and patients.
