CT Lead Radiographers meet in Manchester

ⁱThe Society and College of Radiographers CT Leads Special Interest Group (CTLSIG) held their third meeting in Manchester in June of this year. The event was sponsored by Philips UKI.

The CTLSIG is an opportunity for CT leaders to meet, share and discuss best practice to improve CT services across the UK. Improvements cover all aspects of CT service delivery, such as techniques, activity and capacity, staffing issues and protocols for various clinical tasks.

Chaired by Andrew Stephens, CT Lead Radiographer at Castle Hill Hospital, the meeting opened with a question time session. Members of the audience were able to put their questions to a panel of radiographers, consisting of Cate Savidge, CT Superintendent Radiographer and vice chair of CTLSIG; Stuart Clark, CT Cross Site Lead Radiographer at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Trafford General Hospital; Colin Stuckey, Principal Radiographer (CT) at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust; Jenny Unsworth, CT Clinical Manager at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Nicola Dobson, CT Lead Radiographer at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The questions and subsequent discussions for the panel included PGDs, communication techniques, cardiac CT and pressure injecting through central lines.

After the lunch, Martine Harris, Senior CT and Research Radiographer at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust delivered an inspirational presentation on her PhD research: competency and professional advancement in CT and the development and preliminary evaluation and technical competencies for CT radiographers. Martine was keen to engage with the group and incorporate their ideas into her research. The group undertook some group scoping exercises to inform her research.

This is the first meeting I have had the opportunity to attend and I found it a great platform for sharing best practice within CT nationally. It is also a great resource for collaboration to solve common issues such as staff shortages and develop common standard operating procedures.
