Being a midwife demands something special. It's not just about getting the proper education and building on practical experience. Caring midwives are typically inspired to enter into this field because of their natural curiosity and passion for parents and the babies they help bring into this world. Of course, we at Philips Avent were aware of all this. So when we wanted to better understand how we could better serve their needs, we spoke one-on-one with health care professionals around the world.
The midwives, lactation specialists, gynecologists and pediatricians we've been speaking with have been generous with their precious time. By sharing their experiences - including both the positive and the frustrating moments - they have given us an opportunity to learn. And they taught us more than we'd expected.
For these women (and the occasional man), work is so very personal and intimate, so hectic and filled with the unexpected. And yet, somewhere in the middle of medical examinations and consultations, there's that human touch that brings it all together.
The midwives said they often dealt with concerned parents who challenged their advice. While we all understand that parents know what's best for their baby. But with so much information out there - and so many people offering their opinions about pregnancy and parenthood - even the most resilient parents can begin to doubt what’s best.
In such cases, your expertise has to compete with Google, social media and even a relative’s “helpful” remark. Sometimes the information is true and relevant - other times it's not. All this places extra demands a midwife's time together with parents.
While this pressure can be trying at times, parents come to you because you are a highly trusted source of knowledge - and confidence. In fact, midwives bridge the need for medical expertise and emotional support. Because you are in the perfect position to translate professional insights into personalized information that parents can easily understand. And take to heart.
Philips Avent has enjoyed working side-by-side with professionals like you for the past 100 years. Midwives' experiences and ideas inspire us - as we continue to closely study mother and child physiology. Our learnings help improve and advance our products' technology - and form the basis of the knowledge we share with you in the Philips Avent Academy.
It's all part of making it easier for midwives and other healthcare professionals to focus on that which technology can never replace - your unique ability to combine up-to-date expertise and human understanding. So you can succeed in building parents' knowledge and confidence, as they learn to love their way of parenting.
The 2021 International Day of the Midwife is a celebration and a call to save lives through investing in midwives. What's the situation in Germany?
