Redness, burning, pain: skin irritation after shaving is anything but fun. If you’re tired of having to experience a rash after shaving your beard every time you shave, then this is the guide you’ve been looking for: 11 expert tricks to avoid beard rash after shaving.

How to prevent and soothe irritation after shaving your beard

    1. Don’t shave right before you plan to go somewhere

This gives your skin enough time to relax. Any redness on your face or skin irritation under your beard should have subsided over this time.

    2. Cut long or difficult to shave hair

To prevent skin irritation after a shave, trim any long or stubborn hairs before shaving. The OneBlade has a stubble comb with multiple lengths to trim those stubborn hairs before the actual shave. A little hint: those troublesome hairs are more likely found under your jawbone or around your Adam’s apple.

    3. Wait until your skin has dried after you wash

If you are prone to skin irritation under your beard, try shaving with dry skin. First, start off with a clean base by washing your face with a face wash of your choice. It is a good idea to give yourself a break of five minutes before shaving to allow your face to dry completely. Wet skin can interfere with the smooth movement of the razor on your face and can cause more skin irritation after a shave.

    4. Use specially formulated products to prevent skin irritation on your face

If you prefer a wet shave, be sure to use a shaving cream or gel that is suitable for your skin type but won’t dry out your skin. It’s recommended to test any new products first to avoid using something that might not work for your skin. This will take a bit of “trial and error” until you find the more suitable product for you. The OneBlade is handy because its water-resistant design means you can use it for a dry or wet shave, even in the shower. The OneBlade  also follows the contours of your face and doesn’t cut too close, which keeps your skin comfortable.

    5. Shave in circular movements

Knowing the correct shaving technique can help you avoid skin irritation after shaving. Guide your shaver in small, circular and uniform movements over your entire face. This way, you’ll catch hair that grows in any direction without causing a beard shaving rash with an abrasive movement. Remember: take your time.

    6. Gentle pressure helps to avoid skin irritation after shaving

When you increase the pressure, you also increase the friction, so always be gentle. Shave from start to finish with light pressure, and try not to press the razor into your face. Also, don’t repeatedly shave the same area - nobody wants a bright red beard shaving rash. Divide your face into sections and make sure you don’t overdo it on one of the sections.

    7. Don’t shave too close

There is such a thing as too close for comfort. To avoid skin irritation after shaving, try not to shave too close.1 Use a razor like the OneBlade – the blades never get too close to your face, leaving your skin comfortable, but also thoroughly-shaven and smooth.

    8. Taut your skin to tackle hard-to-reach hairs

If you struggle with the last few hard-to-catch hairs, taut the skin to lift the hair. This makes it easier for the razor to catch the stragglers. Make sure you’re using a sharp and effective razor, like the OneBlade. Its double-sided blade means you can easily and effectively shave from any direction to get rid of every awkward hair.

    9. Avoid rash after shaving your beard with an alcohol-free aftershave

After shaving, apply a soothing, alcohol-free aftershave balm. This can soothe your skin and help prevent a beard shaving rash by cooling and moisturising and allowing any skin irritation on the face to fade away. Why non-alcoholic? Alcohol disinfects the skin, but it can also dry it out, resulting in a raw feeling and beard skin irritation.

    10. Avoid future beard skin irritation by regularly cleaning your razor

To prevent skin irritation after a shave, good hygiene is essential, so always clean your shaver during and after shaving. Run the razor under some lukewarm water – make sure you’re using a water-resistant razor, like the OneBlade, to avoid any water damage to the blades. Shake off excess water and let it dry, and change your blades to keep it as sharp as possible. A dull blade will leave your face feeling sore and even more irritated, which could lead to a beard shaving rash. Never run out with the Philips OneBlade blade subscription.

    11. Shave regularly – but not too regularly

Shave around three times a week for best results and to keep your skin accustomed to an electric razor. Then it can recover for a day in between shaves, and you won’t have to pre-trim your facial hair, as it’ll always stay short.
