    Beard styling trends: Beard braids

    Reading time: 4 mins

A man with a braided Viking beard – he is wearing black clothes and looking into the camera.

It has long been popular in Viking, fantasy, Medieval films and  TV series, and the beard braid is currently having a resurgence outside of our screens. So, why not try braiding your beard? A beard braid is not only eye-catching, but also can be very practical during the heat, during sports, or on days when facial hair is a little too much.

But how do you plait a beard? This is our ultimate guide to how to braid beard hair:

The right length for a beard braid

What length you need to braid a beard depends on which part of the beard you want to braid. For smaller braids we recommend at least 7cm of length, with 10cm for a medium length and 15cm for a larger beard braid. The best starting beards to add a braid to are longer beards like the Viking style beard. If you have a full face of facial hair, you will have a ton of choice for the kind of braid that you want, so look around for the styles that interest you.

    Beard braid styles

There are many styles to choose from for a plaited beard. You could choose a central plait as thick or thin as you prefer, and you can have it tight against the chin or loose in the ‘French’ style. Wondering how to Viking braid your beard? You could have a pair of Viking beard braids separate from the rest of your beard. Sometimes, beards are divided into two outer braids alongside a long beard, or two long braids while the rest of the beard is kept short and trimmed. You could even add beads or pearls to your beard plaits for more of a pirate style.

Braided beard grooming: preparation and trimming

Whether you decide on a Viking beard, a plaited beard or even a pigtail beard, no matter what, your eye-catching facial hair should be in top condition. Always keep it at the desired length with a beard trimmer. Wild, unkempt hairs will stand out when next to your neatly plaited beard.

A precise beard trimmer like the OneBlade Pro, is especially helpful if you want to deal with those straggling hairs while keeping the rest of your beard maintained. Wash, dry and comb your whiskers before braiding, because beard grooming is important for a healthy beard. Apply a little bit of beard oil so your whiskers are not too dry or break easily, and so that the beard braid holds better. Shave off the neck and cheeks and cut the contours of your beard. With the flexible double-sided blade on the OneBlade Pro, this is fast work.

How to braid your beard hair

If you want to know how to braid or plait a beard, here's how to do a simple braid:

    1. Take the part of your beard hair that you want to braid, whether just the ends of the moustache or all or part of the beard
    2. Separate them into three roughly equal sections
    3. Start with one of the outer sections and pull or put this one over the middle one so that it is now in the middle and the middle slips behind it to its previous position
    4. You do the same with the third braid and then change back to the other side and on and on

Make sure your braided beard does not get too tight, as it will hurt your hair.

Finish your braided or plaited beard

You can continue your braid until your desired length. The braid does not have to reach to the very end of your beard; you can try changing the length up to keep things interesting. You can use hair ties to close your beard braid, or with a thinner braid simply close it with some beard wax. Hairspray may also help here.

If you want to give your beard a little decoration, beads are a great choice. Thread the braids of your beard through the beads at different heights and with a different numbers of beads to give yourself a bit more beard braid uniqueness.

No matter what you choose, braiding your beard is a brilliant way to stand out from the facial hair-possessing crowd, or the clean-shaven as well. And now you know how to braid your beard to set yourself apart.
