Dare to bare: the beard without moustache

    Reading time: 5 mins

A man with light hair and facial hair only on his chin in front of sunshine and green trees.

The most maverick of facial hair. A beard that refuses to follow rules and follows its own path, alongside the face on which it is carried. Anyone who wears a beard without a moustache knows exactly what they’re doing, challenging the expectations of facial hair in the most roguish of ways. We rarely see a “full beard, no moustache” look in regular life, but this type of facial hair is particularly brilliant for accentuating a strong jawline. So how do you grow a beard with no moustache that would make Abraham Lincoln proud? We’ll show you some of the best beard styles with no moustache to attain this unique look.

The different types of beards without moustaches

There are two main paths to take when deciding on a beard with no moustache: a “chin strap” or the longer “chin curtain” – and both differ wildly. The “chin strap” – much like the name may suggest, is a much narrower strip of facial hair that runs along the edge of your jawline. The “chin curtain”, on the other hand, covers the chin completely, stretching across the neckline like a full beard. The iconic Shenandoah or Amish beard can even reach down to the chest in length.

Chin curtain: a fuller beard, no moustache

Ahoy for the “chin curtain”. The full beard without a moustache has adorned the faces of everything from historic sea captains, the Amish and even that iconic president Abraham Lincoln. With a chin curtain, you can easily compliment your face and jawline, so here’s how to achieve it:

    1. Grow your beard to at least 1 cm and make sure it’s dry. Take a beard trimmer to bring it to an even 3 to 5mm length.
    2. Use a precision trimmer like the OneBlade to contour the chin curtain cleanly according to your natural face shape. Using your trimmer, draw a line on both sides of your face, about 5 cm above your jaw line, starting from your sideburns, from the middle of the ear, and going to the middle of your chin.
    3. Trim and style your chin curtain using a beard trimmer with a comb attachment set to your desired beard length. Keep styling until you have defined a beard with no moustache and a slightly angular shape. If you’re using the OneBlade, choose your stubble comb length and get trimming.
    4. For the outer definition, use the precision trimmer. Hold the beard trimmer upright and carefully shape the edge of the hair into well-formed lines. The double-sided blade on the OneBlade is ideal for shaving precise definition.
    5. Carefully shave off the hair under the mouth with the precision trimmer before shaving the cheek and neck area with a rotary shaver. Slide the rotary shaver around your chin curtain in quick, circular movements with light pressure.

This no moustache beard is relatively easy to care for. You just have to keep the cheeks, the moustache area and the area under the mouth clean with a razor, and trim the beard curtain to the correct length, regularly. You’ll need a well-stocked supply of blades to keep those areas of your face clean – never run out of blades with the OneBlade subscription.

The chip strap: one small beard, no moustache

Once worn by hip hop artists in the '90s, the chin strap is a relatively modern beard style. It’s a bit more elaborate than the chin curtain, requiring more care due to its short length and narrow width along the jaw. This no moustache beard is a bit higher maintenance, as you’ll need to shave daily to ensure that it’s always well contoured.

    1. Trim your beard down to 3 to 5 mm.
    2. Then, using the precision trimmer, shape a 2.5 cm wide strip along your jawline, from the top of the sideburn on one side of the face to the other side.
    3. Finally, shave off the cheek and neck around the chin strap.

Other beard styles with no moustache:

There are tonnes of creative beard styles no moustache alone could top (except, maybe, the walrus ). For example, the goatee – without a moustache, is sometimes called the “chin puff” and uses the hair on your chin. Neither the goatee nor moustache, mind, take the top prize when it comes to tiny beard styles. The “soul patch” appears directly below your mouth, often in a triangular shape.

Of course, you can wear any beard without a moustache, like the 3-day stubble beard , just by cleaning the hair above your lip. Once you have the confidence to flaunt the beard without its friendly upper lip neighbour, you can let your imagination run wild!
