Sterilising baby bottles: Your guide to different sterilising techniques

As you’ve no doubt realised, there are multiple ways of doing everything in the world of parenting. Cleaning and sterilising your baby’s things included! Between UV sterilisation, steaming, and boiling, it can be hard to know how to sterilise feeding bottles for the first time. So, we’re here to help you make sense of why sterilising is important, and which technique might be the best way to sterilise baby bottles for you and your lifestyle.

Why is sterilising baby bottles so important?

Let’s start with the obvious question: why is sterilising baby bottles, in addition to regular cleaning, important?

It all has to do with your baby’s immune system. As adults, we’ve been exposed to lots of different bacteria, which means our immune systems are able to fight off harmful germs. Babies, on the other hand, still have developing immune systems, which means they need a little extra protection. Think of sterilising as that extra layer of reassurance that your baby’s items are safe and clean.

Overview of some of the best ways to sterilise baby bottles

Sterilising, unlike cleaning with mild detergent, specifically eradicates bacteria that could harm your baby. If you want to learn how to sterilise baby bottles the right way, read on!

You can sterilise by boiling items in water or using a dedicated electric steam or UV steriliser. As with all choices, it’s a matter of weighing up which method works best for you as a parent and your lifestyle. For example, boiling is the most cost effective but can be time-consuming. Meanwhile, electric steam sterilisers are chemical-free and extremely thorough but do require you to buy an extra appliance.

Which sterilising technique will work best for me?

While there’s no single best way to sterilise baby bottles, each method does vary in terms of efficacy, speed, portability, price and its effect on plastic. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each one so you can make an informed decision that’s right for you.

If you’re using specific bottles and want to know how to sterilise Avent bottles, for example, why not test out our new Philips combo bottle warmer and steriliser? On the product page, you can learn more about how to use this Philips Avent steriliser and its benefits. But read on for some more overall information about sterilisation.

    1. Steam sterilisation

As the name suggests, steam sterilisation involves using high-temperature steam to remove harmful bacteria. You can do this with an electric steam steriliser or by using a microwave steam steriliser.

      Pros

      • Eradicates 99.9% of germs, even int hard-to-reach places
      • Thorough without damaging material
      • Natural and chemical-free
      • Fast sterilisation, most take around 8 minutes
      • Sterilise baby bottles at the same time as toys and pacifiers
      • Easy to use

      Cons

      • Less portable than other methods
      • High-temperature steam can potentially scald or leak

      Electric vs microwave steam sterilisation

As you now already know, there are two ways to sterilise your baby’s items using steam. Yes, another choice! If you’d like to use this method, know that electric steam will give you the most control and convenience. Microwave steam sterilisers allow you to use the power of natural steam, but there are more parts and effort involved.

    2. UV sterilisation

UV, or ultraviolet light, prevents bacteria from reproducing, making it ideal for sterilizing baby items.

      Pros

      • Easier to use on-the-go because you don’t need water
      • Sterilise items beyond baby gear

      Cons

      • Limited efficacy, especially on items with curved or complex shapes
      • Unable to penetrate thicker materials, leaving bacteria
      • Long-term use can degrade plastic materials
      • Long sterilisation time, some take up to 60 minutes
      • Direct exposure to UV light can be harmful to skin and eyes

    3. Boiling

This method involves placing baby items in a pot of water, bringing it to the boil and boiling for around 5 minutes before allowing it to cool. It’s the most traditional method of the three and the most cost effective. If you’re wondering if you need to dry bottles after sterilising them in water, then the answer is simple: it's your choice (again). Just like with other dishes, drying them before putting them away is slightly more time-consuming, but then everything is ready just when you need it.

      Pros

      • Cost effective, no need to buy an extra appliance
      • Do it anywhere there is a stove and water
      • Highly effective at killing bacteria
      • Natural and chemical-free
      • Zero waste, no disposable components like sterilising tablet packaging

      Cons

      • Time consuming, compared to electric or microwave steam methods
      • Material can melt, warp or degrade
      • Requires supervision so as not to boil items for too long
      • Less energy efficient than steam or UV sterilisation
      • Potential for high water consumption
      • Potential for recontamination if air drying

    A quick note on dishwashers

While dishwashers are good at cleaning items, they don’t sterilise them. To thoroughly sanitise your baby’s items, be sure to use one of the methods we’ve mentioned above, whether it’s steam, UV or boiling.

As you can see, there’s no one way to sterilise your baby’s items. The best way is the one that works for you and your family’s lifestyle and also gives you the peace of mind you need while raising your baby. If you don’t mind taking a little extra time, simply boiling items could work well for you. On the other hand, if you’d like a simple method that works at the touch of a button so anyone in the family can use it, electric steam or UV could be a better option. Enjoy the journey!
