Cinema 21:9 movie aspect ratio, no black bars at the bottom and top

Cinema 21:9 movie aspect ratio, no black bars at the bottom and top

Most TVs have an aspect ratio of 16:9 (or 1.78:1) and a resolution of 1080p Full HD. However, Hollywood blockbusters are usually filmed in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Philips new Cinema 21:9 TVs perfectly match the original movie format used by directors with a 21:9 (2.39:1) aspect ratio. So no matter which movie, you can now watch it in its original aspect ratio and without the black bars.

Ahead of its time - the only TV for watching FILMS

Bought this some years ago - I dont know what to do when this 58PFL9955 breaks down - repair it for sure. Perfect TV for watching movies, colors are spot on - menu system not good - Ambilight is brillient. I rented a holidy house with a 40" 16:9, the format was relay anoying being used to a 21:9 - black bars at top and bottom - and the schrinked small movie picture on a 16:9. I really hope Philips will make an affordable 82" 21:9, side LED is just fine, I also have the 50" Gold 21:9, better design, backlight is just fine. Dont use the fancy settings on the backlight, dimming etc., makes the pictures look not so good. No need for thiese features. 82" size cause I can then move a bit back from the TV, and watch TV without glasses.

In one word, Brilliant!

Have had this TV for 4 months now and am really, really pleased with it. The picture quality on Blu Ray is outstanding, on DVD the picture is not far short of Blu Ray and even standard Freeview is very good. Not only is the picture very sharp, the colours are very solid and the blacks are very, very black while the whites are very white. On top of this you have the 21.9 widescreen format which is very impressive. I even watch some standard definition Freeview programmes in the widescreen format especially westerns and other outdoor programmes. It has given my DVD collection a new lease of life, they look so good in widescreen and the colours are so natural. In my lounge, the widescreen profile of the set does not make the set so dominating as I thought it would. Ambilight is great, it enhances the picture quality and gives a nice glow to the room. Sound is also very good for a flatscreen, nice and rich although when watching Blu Ray and DVD I use my separate 5.1 surround system. Combined, the two make watching films so much better than any cinema I have been too. The only slight downside that stops this being a perfect set is the slight delay the set takes to detect a widescreen format, it often takes 10 seconds to completely fill the screen. The operating menu for Freeview also needs improving, it takes several operations to see what the programme content is. This model lacks a High Definition Freeview tuner but not a great problem as I shall soon be buying a separate HD tuner combined with a hard drive. This is a very unique TV and I find it is just amazing as do my friends and family. Philips is to be congratulated for producing such a unique TV. You just have to see it to believe how good it is. All other 16.9 sets look so unnatural by comparison.
