Whether it’s for the visual-enhancement factor, comfort, or more skin on skin contact during intimate situations, there are a number of reasons why you might want to shave or trim your pubic hair. With a significant proportion of men expanding their grooming routine to include areas below the belt, you might be wondering what your options are.
You can also use a trimmer or razor to shape or tidy your pubic hair by trimming around the edges, but try to retain the natural shape (unless creating a more elaborate shape is your goal, of course). Two important tips to keep in mind. Firstly, only trim your balls with a trimmer that has a sensitive skin guard or comb for that purpose. The skin in that area is particularly sensitive, so it’s worth being careful. Secondly, be sure to clean your trimmer thoroughly after using it on your pubic hair if you intend to use it on other parts of your body afterwards. Depending on how fast your hairs grow, you’ll need to repeat the process once every few weeks to stay looking well-groomed.
If you feel like things have gotten a little out of control down there but don’t want to go clean shaven, a trim is a great solution. Use a body groomer or other hair trimmer with a comb or adjustable length to trim your pubic hair, as well as any surrounding areas that you want to tidy (the insides of your thighs, for instance). The exact length you choose is entirely a matter of personal preference, but in general anything less than 5mm might look a little bare, particularly if you have light hair.
Keep in mind that if you have hair on your stomach or thighs, there’s going to come a point where the hairy parts meet the clean-shaven parts, so consider in advance where you’re going to draw the line. For your balls the process is more delicate, so please see our article “Take it easy: trimming and shaving your most sensitive area” for specific information. When shaving close to the skin, irritation and redness can occur, so be sure to apply some aftershave balm or moisturizer immediately after shaving.
If you prefer to go completely clean-shaven down there, then the first step is the same. Trim your pubic hair to a short length (3mm or less) using a trimmer with a comb or adjustable length, and then shave off the short hairs using a razor (with foam or gel), a body groomer or the Philips OneBlade with the sensitive skin guard attached.
Stubble is very much in fashion these days, but it doesn’t apply when it comes to pubic hair, so keep in mind that you’ll need to shave at least weekly to keep things feeling smooth.
