What's my Philips Avent electric breast pump's max suction level?

    Published on 20 March 2025

Instead of using the highest level, try adjusting the settings until you find you maximum comfortable suction level. This means the highest level where you can pump without experiencing pain or discomfort, which encourages efficient milk expression.

Learn more about finding your maximum comfortable suction level below.

For reference, your Philips Avent electric breast pump can be set to a max level of 16 on the motor unit, which is equal to 360 mbar/270 mmHg.

Finding your max comfortable suction level

To find your maximum comfortable suction level, start pumping at the lowest level and slowly increase the suction until you reach a strength that feels mildly uncomfortable. Then, lower the suction by one or two levels from there. You should be able to feel the suction clearly, but you should NOT be experiencing pain or discomfort.

Your maximum comfortable suction level may vary with each pumping session and time of day (especially between daytime and nighttime). Make sure to check and adjust your settings every time before you pump.

    What does "hospital-strength" mean?

We use "hospital-strength" as a simple way to say that your pump is safe and has a pumping strength equal to pumps used by hospitals. It is also designed to mimic the nursing habits of your newborn to encourage effective milk production.
