Trimming and shaving body hair isn’t exactly a common topic of conversation amongst friends, especially when it comes to talking about shaving your more sensitive areas. This can lead to a lot of misconceptions about body grooming and manscaping practices and how common they actually are, and that’s why we’ve created this handy guide to if and where you should be trimming. But before we get into it, we’ve created straight forward quiz to help you decide if you should be thinking about body grooming at all.
If no, then no problem. It’s your body and if you’re happy and confident with a natural look, then that’s nobody else’s business but yours. There’s no right or wrong answer, and you’re not obliged to change the way you look for anybody else. So if your answer to the above question is “no”, then you probably don’t need to read any further. With the quiz out of the way, let’s get into it.
If yes, then that’s cool, we’ve got plenty of information on the what, the where and the how.
What’s more, the Jama Dermatology study also found that those who said that they did groom were generally younger than those who said that they didn’t, so it’s likely that the trend will continue well into the future.
Yes, absolutely. According to a 2017 study published in Jama Dermatology, 66.5% of male respondents indicated that they had groomed their pubic hair at least once. That’s nearly seven out of ten guys trimming their pubic hair, and that’s before we factor in guys who groom other areas of their body.
You can groom pretty much wherever you want, basically. If it’s hair and it’s on your body and you don’t want it there, you’re absolutely free to get rid of it. Whether you have stray hairs on your toes, some unwanted fuzz between your pecs or a full-on rug on your back that you want to shed, it’s your decision, and we got plenty of tips and advice to help you achieve your goal.
Remember though- there’s more to body grooming than choosing between letting your hair grow wild and shaving it off completely, and there are ways to shorten the length of hairs without going completely clean shaven.
Depending on what you’re trying to achieve, you might need to shave as often as every 2-3 days, or as infrequently as every few weeks. If for example you just want to shorten your chest hair to stop it getting out of control, running a body groomer over it every few weeks (or whenever you notice it’s getting too long) will be plenty enough. On the other hand, if you want to shave your pubic hair off completely and avoid any rough stubble or itchiness when the hairs start to grow back, you’ll need to keep shaving regularly. There’s no straightforward rule when it comes to grooming, it all comes down to what you’re aiming to achieve, how fast your hairs grow and how much time and effort you’re willing to put into it.
The visual effect is one such reason. Body hair can obscure muscle definition, making your hard-earn gains from the gym less visible, and if you regularly take part in risky sports then it’s a lot easier to keep any wounds or cuts clean if your skin is hairless (which is one reason why many professional athletes shave their bodies). It’s also easier to remove sweat from smooth skin after exercise, but keep in mind that there’s no strong evidence to suggest that shaving areas like your armpits significantly reduces sweat-related body odor (see the 2012 study by Charles University study published in the journal of Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology for details). The visual effect is also sometimes mentioned in relation to pubic hair trimming. The principal behind it is pretty simple- it’s easier to see the full height of a tree if you take out the undergrowth around it. However, beyond the visual enhancement effect, some couples enjoy the increased skin-on-skin contact created by the removal of pubic hair. For other intimate activities, and for reasons that are between you and them, your partner might just prefer it if you had less hair. Lastly but no less importantly, some people do find body hair scratchy or uncomfortable, whether it’s hair on their own body or on the body of someone they’re intimate with. Trimming and other hair removal options can help to resolve those kind of issues, but do remember that you’ll need to repeat the process regularly to retain the benefits. Using a conditioner to soften the hairs might also be an option worth considering. As mentioned early on in this article, “because you want to” is the only reason you should ever make cosmetic changes to your appearance, including trimming or shaving your body or pubic hair. But if you’re on the fence and want to know more, there are a few common reasons why guys choose to manscape.
